After the storm – a warning

Croydon Trading Standards team has asked us to publicise their advice as below

Artifice Burglars / Rogue Traders

We have been made aware of a series of incidents in a neighbouring borough involving burglars posing as ‘helpful’ tradesmen who are actually stealing from vulnerable victim’s homes. They may appear genuine and friendly but that is just a false impression to distract you and make you feel at ease.

Please do not allow any trader knocking at your door, suggesting you need work doing, access to your home.

Sadly, the recent storms have given these criminals reason to cold call and suggest they can help with roof repairs and whilst one distracts the resident by showing them alleged damage, the other enters the home and commits a burglary.

If you are unsure of anyone knocking at your door, please do not let them in and call a neighbour, friend or family member for advice. Keep your door closed.

If someone enters your home uninvited or they will not leave when asked – please call 999.

Please also consider not leaving valuables in easy view – eg wallets, handbags, purses. They are often left in the hall, kitchen or living room but it only takes seconds for them to be taken by someone walking through.

If you suspect your home has been damaged in the storms please contact legitimate traders through one of the Approved Trader Schemes:
