Developing Central Croydon

SPRA member, Dawn Gibbons, has taken the trouble to find out what’s going on in Central Croydon:

I went to the last public ‘Calling Croydon’ drop-in organised by Westfield (URW) at Centrale on Wednesday 30th July 2025. I am not sure how many knew about the drop-in sessions as publicity about them was not that wide spread. There was an exhibition on display to explain initial plans for the Whitgift Centre and Croydon North End, and a survey you could fill in – which I did.

Some of the summary points after speaking to staff on site:-

  • The Whitgift Centre will no longer just be a shopping unit but will be for residential use as well which some of you may know already.
  • The original centre will be knocked down.
  • The idea is to build within the area three new blocks consisting of various towers. The height will be 45 floors at its tallest.
  • The car park will close in Wellesley Road. Some underground parking for flat owners and for the disabled will be provided. Each block will aim to house 700 people so a total of over 2,000 people for the three blocks.
  • There will be shops on the ground level of the towers.
  • Various North End shops on the Whitgift side will stay though due to their historical relevance.  Allders building will stay with suggestions for use being for leisure, educational or cultural uses.

For anyone interested there is an online site you can visit to find out more details and complete a survey online up to the end of August and also sign up for a newsletter.

This September issue of SPAN should be delivered soon after 28 August so there may be time to complete the survey before the end of August. If not I am sure you will still be able to sign up for future email updates if you are interested.
