Dear All,
The regeneration of Croydon town centre has reached a significant milestone after the Masterplan Framework for the Whitgift and Centrale shopping centres and surrounding area was endorsed by the Planning Committee recently.
Developers Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) have submitted the framework ahead of a planning application, setting out the principles to redevelop the ‘North End Quarter’ into a vibrant, mixed-use centre. This will include homes, shops, cultural venues and public spaces. It has been developed by URW in collaboration with the Council and following engagement with residents, businesses and community groups. I have led much of the work behind the scenes and now we start to see the results.
The Masterplan Framework proposes the creation of a better-connected town centre through a network of public spaces, green areas and pedestrian friendly streets. Historic landmarks, like the Whitgift Almshouses and landmark Allders building, will be conserved and integrated into the new development.
The regeneration of Croydon is a priority of mine. I want to see pride restored in the borough, as set out in my Business Plan.
URW’s Masterplan Framework for the North End Quarter seeks to align with my vision for the wider town centre area. At the same time, a new inward investment plan sets out how I will bring partners, developers, investors and communities together to support regeneration and create economic opportunity.
The government centrally makes life so difficult for businesses in Croydon with their tax, borrow and spend policies. But I will continue to push forward town centre regeneration despite the obstacles in our way.
A range of housing types will be delivered, providing an additional customer base to add to the viability and the atmosphere, without overwhelming it.
Our partnership with URW is fundamental to Croydon’s transformation and I welcome the next stage in the development of their now endorsed masterplan which will bring about new homes, shops, educational and cultural spaces, where Croydon’s businesses can thrive and communities flourish.
I will keep you up to date as my plans continue to move forward.
Best wishes,
Mayor Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
